This steel-framed extension to a bungalow overlooking the sea comprises
a cantilevered roof and balcony and completely glazed west
façade. In order to eliminate any down-standing beams in the
ground floor ceiling or visible supporting columns, the design re-uses
the original trusses, combined to form girders to support the new first
floor structure.
The portal frame is enclosed on the ground floor by timber cladding and
clad in zinc where it emerges through the balcony. The first floor
spans 6.6-metres across a new opening in the original external wall.
Most internal walls were demolished and the floor re-built to create an
open plan living/ kitchen/ dining area of 90m2. Solar
collectors contribute to both hot water and underfloor heating and roof
and balcony overhangs prevent summer overheating.
Locally sourced Western Red Cedar, galvanized steel, pre-weathered zinc
and anodised aluminium, were chosen for durability and minimal
maintenance in the coastal environment.
